Who is eligible for the heat pump hot water rebate in Victoria?
You qualify if you are an owner-occupier of an existing Victorian home, your combined household income is under $150,000 a year, the property is worth under $3 million, the system you are replacing is at least 3 years old, and the home has not had a Solar Homes hot water rebate before.
Miss any one of those and the rebate does not get paid, so it pays to check before you commit. You also have to use a system from Solar Victoria's approved product list and install it through an authorised retailer.
The income cap is the one that trips people up. It dropped from $210,000 to $150,000 on 1 July 2026, so plenty of older websites (and competitors) still quote the wrong number.
How much is the rebate worth?
The rebate is 50% of the purchase price, capped at $1,000 for most systems or up to $1,400 for a locally made product. Stacked with federal STCs and the Victorian Energy Upgrades discount, Solar Victoria says the combined incentives can cut your upfront cost by up to $2,030.
The order matters: the STCs and VEU discount come off the price first, then the Solar Victoria rebate is calculated on what is left. Many of the big brands we install have locally made models on the list, so the higher $1,400 amount is often within reach.
Eligible homeowners in Warrnambool may be able to access federal and state rebate programmes to help offset the cost of upgrading to an energy-efficient hot water system. These incentives can make the upfront investment more manageable and improve the overall payback period. A qualified plumbing professional or electrical expert can help you determine which rebates apply to your situation.
How do I apply for the Victorian hot water rebate?
You do not do the heavy lifting. Your authorised retailer uploads your quote to the Solar Victoria portal, you upload ID and proof of income, Solar Victoria confirms eligibility and emails a QR code, the installer scans it on site, and the rebate comes straight off your invoice.
• Get a written quote from an authorised retailer using an eligible product.
• Get a written quote from an authorised retailer using an eligible product.
• The retailer uploads it, then you get pre-approval.
• You prove eligibility with two forms of ID and proof of income.
• Solar Victoria emails your QR code; the installer scans it and fits the system within 120 days.
• The rebate is deducted from your invoice, so you only pay the balance.
If your old system dies and you need hot water fast, there is an emergency install path so you do not have to wait for approval, you just prove eligibility straight after.
Do I have to replace my gas hot water soon anyway?
From 1 March 2027, when a gas hot water system in an existing Victorian home breaks and cannot be repaired, it must be replaced with an efficient electric system like a heat pump. So if your gas unit is ageing, planning the switch now while rebates are healthy beats scrambling later.
This rule applies to hot water specifically. There is no requirement to change gas heating or cooktops in existing homes. But for hot water, the direction is set, so it is worth getting ahead of it.
FAQs
Can renters or landlords get the rebate?
The hot water rebate is for owner-occupiers of an existing home. Rental properties are not eligible under this rebate, so if you are a landlord or tenant, give us a call and we will talk you through the other options.
Do I have to pay the full amount up front and claim it back?
No. The rebate is paid directly to the retailer and taken off your invoice, so you only ever pay the difference once the system is installed.
Is there a limit on how many rebates I can get?
One hot water rebate per property. If you have had one at a previous home and moved, you can apply again at your new place as long as that property has not had one before.
